Bondi Tens 2008

The 2007 Bondi Tens were played in glorious sunshine on 9/10th February 2007. The storms that were forecast never materialized and large crowds were treated to two days of high quality exciting, but social, rugby. See all the photos at:

Since the inaugural tournament in 2005, numbers of teams competing have increased from 16, to 18 and this year, 24.

On Day 1, six pools of four teams played round- robin. In Pool A, old faithful the Navy again won all their pool matches, against Schooners, Spanner’s BOBS from Queensland and late entrants UNSW.

In Pool B, the Gents Barbarians, the eventual winners, after comfortably beating a Tattersalls team that looked good on paper, surprisingly lost to Iggies, but then went on to win the pool by beating leaguies Bondi United.

Waverley re-invented themselves as the ANZACS and won Pool C by narrowly beating Kokoda Brothers (KBs) and new entrants Balmain Bugs, and then perennial underdogs Silver Bullets. In Pool D highly fancied NSW Country Barbarians won a tight game against Misfits and went on to comfortably beat Bali Legends and the Fire Brigade. In an opening game of the tournament, Misfits thrashed the Bali Legends, a great team of players from home and away who have played in the Bali Tens, where so many of their mates were killed in the 2002 bombings.

Colleagues had wins against three newcomers (Uni WA, Toucans and Potts Point Pirates) to win Pool E. The newcomers each had a win against each other so went into the knockouts with a fair amount of confidence.

In Pool F, UTNBN from Cowra drew with Mosman but won the pool with large scores against Landmark and Convicts. Convicts were chuffed to win their first game at a Bondi Tens when they beat the Bali Legends in a close match.

Day 2, 10th February, was Knockout Day. Winners of each Pool and the top two ranked teams played off for the Cup, 9-16 ranked teams for the Plate and bottom ranked for the Bowl.

The premier event, the Bondi Tens Cup, was won for the second time in succession by the Gents Barbarians. To get to the final Gents narrowly beat a very game UTBNB and equally competitive ANZACS (who beat second ranked Schooners) to meet Misfits in the Final. Misfits did it tough, having to beat NSW Country Barbarians and Colleagues. In the Final -a repeat of 2006- Gents Barbarians were too organized and strong for Misfits to run out Cup Winners 12-5.

Previously, UNSW beat the Fire Brigade and Convicts to reach the final of the Bowl, where they beat newcomers Landmark, who had narrowly knocked out BOBS and Bondi United. On the way, Bali Legends were narrowly beaten by a Convicts golden point, and Silver Bullets, yet to win at a Bondi Tens game (but great competitors), were knocked out by Bondi United.

In the Plate, Tattersalls were too good for Mosman and UniWA but were beaten by surprise-package Balmain Bugs, who had beaten KBs and gallant Toucans on the way through. Iggies were knocked out by UniWA, Pirates by KBs
