The Wanderers
The Wanderers hail from the land of air-conditioning and no chewing gum. A place where a gathering of five could be construed to be a riot. A place where you land at Changi with a suitcase filled with heroin "at your own risk". Yes, Singapore.
The Singapore authorities have granted special permission for the team to leave this weekend to take part in the Bondi 10s for the very first time. Inspired by the oft-chanted mantra "Let's Get Looooooooose", and their mascot Spongebob Squarepants, the Wanderers love to break the shackles of their homeland every once in a while. We're regulars at Phuket where we'll be going in May, and we'll be heading up to Jakarta in March to spice things up further - yes folks, it's pretty dull in Singapore after a while, but the airport's nice and close. And it's air-conditioned.
We are a mix of nationalities as you would expect, but more surprising is that we lay claim to the only Kiwi never to have been to Sydney (or for matter, NSW) before. Also known as The Beige Assassin (TBA for short), Calven Bland has made an exception to his rule for this weekend only and will be Wanderers' Minister in Charge of Refreshments (Water Boy for short) during the tournament. Also touring are a couple of Poms, a Zimbo, a Saffer, and some Aussies keen for a taste of their mum's home cooking. Ain't that sweet?
Wanderers are proudly sponsored by San Miguel and Harry's Bar in Singapore - yes, the one where Nick Leeson (non-playing member) plotted the downfall of Barings over a pint of San Miguel, who funnily enough are sponsoring our shirts on tour! If you're ever in town on a Saturday night, make a bee-line for Boat Quay where you will undoubtedly find us. |
