Royal Australian Navy

Royal Australian NavyThe Royal Australian Navy Rugby Union (RANRU) has a long and proud history within the Australian Defence Force. Rugby is frequently played between Ship's teams when schedules permit and, when on deployment, games are often arranged against teams from foreign Navies. RANRU has recently badged its team as the ‘Breakers’. In October 2006 the team contested the Commonwealth Navies Rugby Cup in Cape Town against the Navies of the UK, NZ and South Africa.

The Breakers include players from throughout the Navy and contest the annual Australian Services Rugby Championships against Army and Air Force. RANRU were champions in 1999, 2000 and 2005.

With current operational requirements in the Persian Gulf, Solomon Islands and East Timor as well as Border Protection, many players are regularly unavailable. Subsequently the Breakers are selected from the best of what is available. Naval life often prevents players from playing club Rugby so RANRU is continually challenged to keep tabs on prospective representatives. A network of local contacts throughout all states and territories assists with keeping selectors up to date with player progress and achievements.

RANRU is a member Union of the Australian Services Rugby Union (ASRU) and playing colours are navy and white. For the Bondi Tens the Breakers will be a selection from NSW and ACT based players.
